Installable ActiveX components – Windows Hosting

installable-activex-components

There are several installable ActiveX components used to create objects for use in Active Server Pages.

Database Access

The Database Access component uses ActiveX data objects (ADO) to access information stored in a database or other tabular data structure. It also uses the connection pooling feature of ODBC 3.0 to make database access more efficient.

Browser Capabilities

The Browser Capabilities component provides your scripts with a description of the capabilities of the client’s Web browser. When a browser connects to the Web server, it automatically sends a User-Agent HTTP header, an ASCII string that identifies the browser and its version number. The Browser Capabilities component compares the header to entries in the Browscap.ini file.

If it finds a match, the Browser Capabilities component assumes the properties of the browser listing that matches the user agent header.
If the component does not find a match for the header in the Browscap.ini file, it takes on the default browser properties.
You can add properties or new browser definitions to this component by updating the Browscap.ini file.

Content Rotator

Each time a user opens or reloads the Web page, the Content Rotator component displays different content based on the information specified in the Rotator schedule file.

Using the Content Rotator, an advertising account manager with little or no HTML experience can manage the placement of new advertisements. Besides, the advertising manager can record how many users click each advertisement by setting the Redirect parameter in the Rotator schedule file. Specifying this parameter causes each click on an ad to be recorded in the Web server activity logs.

Content Linking

The Content Linking component manages a list of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) in your Web site. It automatically generates and updates the table of contents and navigational links io previous and subsequent Web pages. It is ideal for applications such as online newspapers and forum message listings.

File Access

The File Access component uses the FileSystemObject and TextStream objects to retrieve and modify information stored in files on the server.

ASP Objects – Windows Hosting

asp-objects

Objects manage the Application state and provide simple access to forms and HTTP parameters. They come in both built-in and installable forms.

Objects are components of a programming language that provide tools for competing for basic repetitive programming tasks. Objects ofter provide simple access to forms and manage Application state. ASP objects come in built–in and installable forms.

The Active Server Pages (ASP) framework provides six built-in objects which you can use them in scripts.

Server Object

The server object provides access to methods and properties on the server.

Application Object

You can use the application object to sharing information among all the users of a given application. An ASP-based application defined as all the .asp files in a virtual directory and its subdirectories. Because more than one user can share the application object, there are methods for locking and unlocking it to ensure that multiple users do not try to alter a property simultaneously.

Session Object

The session object stores information needed for a particular user session. Variables stored in the session object not discarded when the user jumps between pages in the application; instead, these variables persist for the entire user session.

The Web server automatically creates a session object when a user who does not already have a session requests a Web page from the application.

The server destroys the session object when the session expires or is abandoned.
One common use for the session object is to store user preferences such as high, medium, or low graphics set on a previous visit to the Web applications. Session state is maintained only for browsers that support cookies.

Request Object

The request object retrieves the values that the client browser passed to the server during an HTTP request.

Response Object

The response object sends output to the client.

ObjectContext Object

The ObjectContext object is used either to commit or abort a transaction initiated by an ASP script. The ObjectContext object provides for information about the transactions and additionally provides information about the client and the state of the client’s connection to the server. It permits the developer to avoid an expensive operation if the user has canceled the page.

ASP Scripts Features

asp-scripts-features

  • ASP scripts are compatible with any ActiveX scripting language and contain server extensions that are compatible with HTML.
  • Active Server Pages (ASP) built on a scripting engine, enabling support to multiple scripting languages such as Visual Basic Script (VBScript), Java Script (JScript), Practical Extraction and Reporting Language (PERL), among others.
  • Developers may create the components to interface with the scripting engine to create new scripting languages.
  • Server Side Scripting provides the structure for ASP.
  • Application developers use scripting to provide input to components and may use a script for simple functions and calculations.
  • ASP built on a scripting engine that exposes an object model for the Web application developer’s use. VBScript—a subset of Visual Basic—is included with ASP to take advantage of the developer’s knowledge of that programming model.
  • Besides, JScript included in the default installation of ASP. JScript is a standard for scripting that is used in most contemporary browsers and is added to capitalize on the developer’s knowledge of that language.

For enhanced performance and scalability, complex calculations and functions written with compiled languages by creating components to provide the desired functionality.

ASP Hosting

asp-hosting

Active Server Pages (ASP) enables you to combine HTML, scripts, and reusable Microsoft ActiveX server components to create dynamic Web sites. ASP provides server-side scripting for IIS with native support for both Microsoft® Visual Basic® Scripting Edition and Microsoft® JScript™. Processing for ASP occurs on the server. The output of an ASP file is plain HTML customized for the Web browser.

Dynamic Content

Using ASP allows a Web developer to provide, with relatively little effort, dynamic content to users. The Web site can deliver content customized for that particular user based on user preferences, demographics, customer information, or a more fundamental criterion, like whether the user’s Web browser can view content displayed in frames.

Easy Database Connectivity

The Active Data Object (ADO) component provides standard access to multiple data sources. IIS includes drivers for Microsoft® SQL Server™, Microsoft Access and Oracle databases. Using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), other databases supported.
The OLE DB further extends the ODBC standard to permit connection to various data sources. These data sources include Microsoft® Excel files, text files, log files, Microsoft® Exchange servers, indexed sequential access method (ISAM), virtual storage access method (VSAM), AS/400 and many other sources.

Scalable Server-Side Solution

The IIS administrator may choose to run all of the applications on the Web server in the same address space for scaling and efficiency. By default, IIS uses threads within the Web server’s address space, instead of creating a new process for each user. The administrator can configure a single application to run in a separate memory space, to assure that a problem with one application will not impact the remaining Web applications on the server. Running applications in their memory space requires additional memory.

Integrated State and User Management

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a stateless protocol. The Web server does not maintain state information about the client. Creating dynamic applications requires state management, which ASP can provide. Using the Application and Session objects, the state of the application is available in both Application and Session scope. The Application object is a repository for information and objects that are available application wide. In this sense, they are ‘global‘ objects and data. The Session object maintains information on a per-user basis. A separate copy of the Session object created for each user of the application.

Reusable Software Model

ASP enables developers to reuse software components. Components may also be aggregated. For example, if a component provides 85 percent of the functionality required by an application, the developer may just capitalize on the functions of that component and only code the remaining 15 percent of the functionality required.

Publishing Content – Windows Hosting

publishing-content

With Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), Web authors have many choices when it comes to publishing content to the Internet.

Basic Linked Content

The most basic type of Web content described as static and linked. This material contains basic Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), embedded graphics and links for navigation. The same content is shown to all visitors.

Dynamic HTML

With the introduction of Microsoft Internet Explorer, Web authors can use dynamic HTML to control any page element, and to change styles, positioning, and content at any time—even after the client loads the page.

Data Bound Applications

Active Data Objects (ADO) and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) technologies enable databases accessible from either an intranet or the Internet. Using ADO and ODBC, a Web browser can be an interface for a database, allowing Web authors to create interactive and customized Web content.

Interactive Applications

To create Web-based applications, IIS provides Active Server and Active Client technologies. With these technologies, you can book a hotel, complete expense reports, or check your personal information, all from the Web browser.

Personalization and Transaction Processing

Adding to the data bound and interactive applications, Microsoft Personalization Server and Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) enable users to personalize and manage Web applications. Personalization Server works with Active Server Pages to dynamically generate Web pages based on stored user preferences, allowing you to deliver targeted content to each site visitor.

Microsoft Transaction Server allows an application development as if it is to run on only one computer. It speeds and simplifies the software development process, so the developer doesn’t have to worry about issues such as security, a context of the users, and scalability. When an application invokes MTS, it ensures that all the necessary issues, such as safety and user context, are handled. Installing MTS enables applications that have been written to take advantage of it to run on IIS. Besides, MTS makes it easy to manage these transactional applications.

Microsoft Certificate Server Features

microsoft-certificate-server-features

Microsoft Certificate Server includes Web-based administration tools that provide services for accessing the data contained in the server database. These tools include the Certificate Log Utility and Certificate Queue Utility for administering data in the server log and server queue, respectively. Additional administration tools may be written using the administration interface.

Microsoft Certificate Server runs as a Microsoft Windows NT service. By default, it is set up to have automatic Startup Type. Consequently, it will start automatically when the operating system loads unless the service has been reconfigured to have manual Startup Type. Additionally, The Certificate Authority service will stop automatically when the operating system is unloaded, or it can be stopped manually.

Microsoft Certificate Server issues digital certificates that enable server and client authentication under the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. The process of obtaining a digital certificate is called certificate enrollment. This process begins with a client submitting a certificate request and ends with the installation of the issued certificate in the client application.

Certificate Server includes an HTTP enrollment control with forms for the following certificate enrollment tasks:

  • Installing Certificate Authority (CA) certificates.
  • Enrolling a Web server.
  • Client certificate enrollment using Microsoft® Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later.
  • Client certificate enrollment using Netscape Navigator.

The enrollment control and its forms are accessed through the Certificate Server Enrollment Page. This page is available from the Certificate Server Administration Tools Web Page.

Processing Certificates – Windows Hosting

processing-certificates

Microsoft Certificate Server provides services for processing certificate requests and issuing digital certificates. Certificate Server performs the following steps when processing a certificate request:

Server Engine

The server engine is the core component of Certificate Server. The engine acts as a broker for all requests it receives from the entry modules, driving the flow of information between components during the processing of a request and generation of a certificate. At each processing stage, the engine interacts with the various modules to ensure appropriate action is taken based on the state of the request.

The intermediary is the architectural component that receives new certificate requests from clients and submits them to the server engine.
The intermediary is composed of two parts, the intermediary application that performs actions on behalf of clients, and the Certificate Server Client Interface that handles communications between the intermediary application and the server engine.
Intermediaries can be written to handle certificate requests from different types of clients, across multiple transports or according to policy-specific criteria.
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) is an intermediary that provides support for clients over HTTP. Intermediaries can also check on the status of a previously submitted request and obtain the Certificate Server’s configuration information.

Certificate Publication

The Server Engine stores the completed certificate in the certificate store and notifies the intermediary application of the request status. If the exit module has so requested, the Server Engine will notify it of a certificate issuance event. This allows the exit module to perform further operations such as publishing the certificate to a directory service. Meanwhile, the intermediary gets the published certificate from the certificate store and passes it back to the client.

Policy Module

The policy module contains the set of rules governing issuance, renewal, and revocation of certificates. All requests received by the server engine passed to the policy module for validation. Policy modules are also used to parse any supplemental information provided within a request and set properties on the certificate accordingly.

Extension Handlers

Extension handlers work in tandem with the policy module to set custom extensions on a certificate. Each extension handler acts as a template for the custom extensions that should appear in a certificate. The policy module must load the appropriate extension handler when it is needed.

Exit Modules

Exit modules publish completed certificates and CRLs through any number of transports or protocols. By default, the server notifies each exit module installed on the server whenever a certificate or CRL is published.
Certificate Server provides a Component Object Model (COM) interface for writing custom exit modules for different transports/protocols or custom delivery options. For example, an LDAP exit module might be used to publish only client certificates in a Directory Service and not server certificates. In this case, the exit module can use the COM interface to determine the type of certificate that the server is issuing and filter out any that are not client certificates.

Certificate Authorities (CAs) – Windows Hosting

certificate-authorities

In addition to the server and client authentication certificates issued by Certificate Server, there are certificates that identify Certificate Authorities (CAs).

The CA certificate is a signature certificate that contains a public key used to verify digital signatures. It identifies the CA that issues server or client authentication certificates to the servers and clients that request these certificates. Clients use the CA certificate of the CA issuing the server certificate to validate the server certificate. Servers use the CA certificate of the CA issuing the client certificate to validate the client certificate.

A self-signed CA certificate is also called a root certificate because it is the certificate for the root CA. The root CA must sign its own CA certificate because by definition there is no higher certifying authority to sign its CA certificate.

CA certificates are not requested and issued in the same manner as server and client authentication certificates. Server and client authentication certificates are unique for each requesting server and client, and are not shared—they must be generated and issued by a CA upon demand. In contrast, the CA certificate does not require issuance upon demand. Instead, it is created once and then made readily available to all servers or client who request certificates from the CA.

The commonly applied technique for distributing CA certificates is to place them in a location known and accessible to anyone who requests certificates from the CA.

In the Certificate Log Administration Web page, click Form View to view the data for the currently selected certificate. You can also click on the certificate’s link in the far-left column of the list view, or double-click anywhere on the certificate entry.

Viewing Certificates with the Filter

In the Certificate Form Viewer Web page, click Filter to enter filter criteria for viewing certificates with the filter. Click Apply to apply the filter criteria, and then click List View to return to a list of certificates that match the filter criteria.

Digital Certificates – Windows Hosting

digital-certificates-windows-hosting

Microsoft Certificate Server enables anyone to create digital certificates for Web servers, clients, organizations, and others. Given that anyone can issue digital certificates, how can we be sure that the certificate owner is who they claim to be, and not, for example, a Trojan Web server?
In the process of issuing a digital certificate, the Certificate Authority (CA) validates the identity of the individual requesting the certificate and then signs the certificate with its own private key.
A client application—such as Microsoft Internet Explorer—will check the CA signature before accepting a certificate. If the CA signature is not valid, or if it comes from an unknown Certificate Authority, Microsoft Internet Explorer will warn the user by displaying a security message and may prevent the user from accepting the certificate.
If the certificates issued by your Certificate Server are to be trusted by applications such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, you must identify it as a Certificate Authority.
Certificate Server includes support for client certificate enrollment using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later and Netscape Navigator. For obtaining a client certificate with these browsers, you open the client authentication page and submit your identification information. After Certificate Server creates the client certificate, it will be returned to the browser, which installs the certificate on your client.
Servers that wish to perform authentication of clients must obtain and install a CA certificate provided by the CA that issues the client certificates. The CA certificate is needed by the server to validate the client certificates.
IIS uses CA certificates that are stored in the same location in the system registry as Microsoft Internet Explorer. The procedure for installing CA certificates for use by IIS is to load Microsoft Internet Explorer on the same machine and use it to install the CA certificates just as you would on a client machine.
Netscape Enterprise Server has a user interface for installing the CA certificate for the CA issuing a server certificate as part of the server certificate installation process.
Note Netscape FastTrack Server does not include a user interface to install new Microsoft Certificate Server CA certificates, so it cannot participate in client or server authentication with locally generated certificates.
Request reception. The certificate request is sent by the client to an intermediary application. The intermediary application formats it into a PKCS #10 format request and submits it to the Server Engine/iishelp/certsrv/concept_19.htm.
Request approval. The Server Engine calls the Policy Module, which queries request properties, decides whether the request is authorized or not, and sets optional certificate properties.
Certificate formation. If the request is approved, the Server Engine takes the request and builds a complete certificate.

Web Server Enrollment – Windows Hosting

The CA Certificate List Web page allows Web browsers to obtain and install a CA certificate by selecting it from the list of available certificates. This page is stored with CA certificates by Configuration wizard in the Shared Folder and the Default Web Location.

The Web Server Enrollment Page allows the administrator to submit a certificate request to the Certificate Server through a Web-based user interface. To do this, you open a PKCS #10 certificate request file (generated by Key Manager in IIS MMC Admin) using Notepad. Then, use the Clipboard to copy and paste the contents of the requested file into the text box on the enrollment page. After Certificate Server creates the certificate, it will be returned to the browser to save as a file. With IIS, you then run Key Manager and install the new certificate.

Each browser communicating with a Web server that uses a locally generated certificate must obtain and install the CA certificate for the CA that issued the server certificate. The browser uses the CA certificate to validate the server certificate.

Installing CA certificates into Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later is accomplished by loading the Certificate Authority Certificate List Web page at the Shared Folder location.

Viewing Requests with the Filter

In the Certificate Server Queue Administration Form Viewer Web page, click Filter to enter filter criteria for viewing requests with the filter. Click Apply to apply the filter criteria, and then click List View to return to the Certificate Server Queue Administration Web page. Only requests that match the filter criteria displayed in the list view of the Web page.
