Server Resolver problem

hi,

I believe i m having a problem with the resolver.config file on our server with the name servers entered from the datacenter. Are you able to use a third-party DNS server for this? Like one of those offsite DNS sites?

After you change the resolver.config file, is there anything that i need to do or will a simple reboot do the trick?

Thank you

1) You may try this to be the DNS Resolver
140.116.44.180

However, I suggest that you may setup your server to be a DNS Server.

2) Immediately without reboot

usually you may use your datacenters resolvers, ask them what they should be, it should take effect right away once u edit it, you don t have to do anything else

try level3 resolvers;

4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4

Hosts file?

What is the hosts file?

The Hosts file is like an address book. When you type an address like http://www.cpwebhosting.net into your browser, the Hosts file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or “telephone number,” for the server that the site is hosted on. If you do, then your computer will “call it” and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP’s (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it will go to that site.

What we can do is edit that hosts file, so when you put in the domain name it will send you to the webpage that you have on your new server although DNS is still propagating.

How can i do it?

Step 1: Go to My Computer and click on your main hard drive(usually C:/)

Step 2: Click on WINDOWS and then on system32

Step 3: Click on drivers and then etc

Step 4: Open up the Hosts file with notepad or another text editor

You can also use the HOSTS file to block ads. I.E. 0.0.0.0 advertisingsitethatyoudontwant.com If you google for HOST file lists, you can find premade HOSTS files with the majority of AD sites blocked already. I used this a long time ago (premade list) but it ended up blocking certain things I needed.

Ddiffernece between Linux based servers and Unix based servers

What is the differnece between Linux based servers and Unix based servers?

Linux is a type of unix based system. it’s not unix but it’s based off the same system.

That being said what you really mean is what’s the difference between apache and IIS because the O/S doesn’t directly handle web serving. Other components that work in the O/S do. eg: you can run IIS (web server) on a basic install of windows. you must first add IIS to the system)

If you use php/MySQL scripts mostly, it won’t matter which you go with as functionality. But if your scripts use .htaccess files you will have to use an apache based server. 9 times out of 10 that means you’re going to be working on a linux based machine.

If you want to use FrontPage extensions you can do that on Either Apache or IIS. Most companies hosting linux also have the frontpage extensions available.

The difference is much bigger if you have asp sites. Linux cannot run ASP natively like windows can. There are wrappers that some companies use to offer asp functionality, but it’s crippled asp stuff and incomplete. the same is true using php on windows, but it’s a much MUCH lower crippling problem. almost everything php will work on the windows installs.

Host with hsphere

i am looking for a new host, and my main requirement is that it runs hsphere and allows for > 10 addon domains and > 10 SQL DBs.

Advance thanks for any help

cpwebhosting.net provides H-sphere control panel with their all hosting plans.

Need for Static IP address

Hi,

Why there is need for the Static IP addresses, and how they are different from the Dynamic IP addresses?

Static IP address is provided to the hosts that provide services to the other hosts so that clients will be able to refer to them using a consistent IP address.
Dynamic IP address require an IP address pool only as large as the number of the active hosts rather than the total number of hosts.

Class A IP is preferable to Class C IP

Can I get the IP address of class A as that is the only preferable IP than the class C IP.

Well, this is true that the Class C networks may appear less desirable than class A networks. But the problem is that the network address of class A consists of only 8 bits, only 126 class A networks are possible. All such addresses, have long been assigned, so although you might prefer a class A address, you are not likely to receive one.

I have read somewhere that unfortunately, class C addresses are also becoming scarce, even they are 24-bit network address which can yield 16 million possible network addresses.

A new TCP/IP standard, IPv6 will provide 128-bit IP addresses.

127.0.0.0 belongs to which class

Hi,

Class A network addresses 1.0.0.0-126.0.0.0
Class B network addresses 128.0.0-191.0.0.0
in between 127 is left, where it is being used?

well, the IP 127.0.0.0-127.255.255.255 refer to the local host and network – loopback addresses.

Similarly, you will find:
224.0.0.0-239.0.0.0 is reserved to be used by multicast protocols
240.0.0.0-255.0.0.0 is reserved, you cannot used them
10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 is reserved for private networks
172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 reserved for private networks
192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255 is also reserved for private networks

Hosting/reselling in the future

What is your vision of hosting/reselling in the future (like 2010)?

Will the internet be the same? (definitely not) What is going to change?
Will there be a hosting business?

The future of web hosting and web site development is probably in cell phones. Everything keeps getting smaller. Remember how big the very first computers were? There is a really good article in this issue of the Hosting Standard that everyone in the industry should read. Whether it be 5 years from now or 10 years from now, cell phones will be devices that are fully integrated with your computer and the Internet. At that point, who knows if it will create a higher demand for hosting/design services or something will come along to knock it out of the ballpark.

The main thing is that if your a web-based company owner you have to have the flexibility to adjust to the market because we are in a booming industry that is really going to look different in the future.

I think most of the personal website will be host in his own house with his own unlimited bandwidth broadband connection.

I agree with u, its Mean Web Hosting businees even more compatative

I think the hosting business will be after 8-10 yrs but not vast as it is now a days. I fully agree with this opinion that everyone may have there own PC as there server with a T1 Line (easily affordable at that time) and running lots of there own network sites.

Comparing a host

In other words are better trace route times frome various cities over the US mean a host is better than another host that has higher trace route times?

Seems like on some hosts I can burst with a download file with wget faster than vs. another host. But when doing trace routes the higher bursting host has worse traceroute numbers.

So which is better when comparing a host?

Traceroute is not a good measurement of speed

Distance is just one of many factors that affects the performance between two hosts on the Internet. Other factors include bandwidth, server speed, line utilization and backbone connectivity.

U r right tertius.

Traceroute is not a good measurement of speed, it is a measurement of the route that is taken to get to a host, which is important but a long traceroute does not necessarily equate to a slow host (it does not help, but it does not mean a host is slow).

A wget from multiple locations is your best indication because that is most reflective of the experience people are going to have visiting your website.

Traceroute just shows the path that all packets traverse to get from host A to host B.

Lower traceroutes are good, but they are not necessarily indicitive of good network performance. Traceroutes are ICMP messages, so they are low priority messages. A router is going to answer all other queries and then answer ICMP requests — so WGET transfers are more indicitive of the cusotmer experience, since they will be answered in the same manner as a browser query.

GD for image creating script

I m looking for a GD for Script. actually I have made a “image creating” script using php and It requires GD, and I have tryed all my 4 hosting accoutns on different servers, and none of them has it

Advance thanks for any help

Ask your host to provide it
GD is pretty standard to be installed with PHP.. but.. with hosting, you get what you pay for
he doesn’t have this
