Data loss is the worst nightmare of people who own precious computer files, whether website administrators or simple e-mail users. Sometimes, just one wrong push button can make all your files vanish instantly without a trace. Regular backing up is necessary unless you have a magic wand that can make those files reappear. This duty of saving data to another storage device should be the routine of all web admins. A backup of all your website files is essential because it gives you peace of mind in case accidental data loss occurs.
So, if you are serious about keeping your website alive, don’t take the importance of a backup for granted. It is 100% possible and easy, and you can even do it in several ways.
1. Backing Up Using Online Storage
Your server is already an online storage, but get another if you want to be more secure about your files. If you have the money, you can always buy an additional hosting plan, maybe just a basic one. However, this is not a good option for those with limited financial resources. If you are one of these people, sign up for a free online storage service instead. However, this option is only recommended to owners of personal websites that do not have too many files.
2. Backing Up Databases Using phpMyAdmin
Databases are the most common repository of essential records. If you run MySQL, the most widely used database program today, you will likely have phpMyAdmin. A tool written in the PHP programming language, PHPMyAdmin, is used to manage your MySQL database effectively.
To back up your database content, log in to your phpMyAdmin account. You will see the Export link on the main interface. Click it. You will then be taken to the list of all your databases. If you want to save them all, click the “Select All” option. Tick the Save As check box and click Go. A pop-up window will appear. It will prompt you to provide a name for the backup file and the location where you would like to put it. Click OK. Congratulations! You already have a backup copy of your database!
