Value of other extensions

Lets say I have a location names like

Newyork.info
Newyork.org
Newyork.net
Newyork.us

If one of them is 100% of the value, what will be the value of other extensions?

Newyork.info 90%
Newyork.us 100% (if location is in America, obviously)
Newyork.org 75%
Newyork.net 30% (.net sucks for location type sites/domains)

With your example newyork I would rank as follows.

newyork.us
newyork.org
newyork.info
newyork.net

newyork.us will be best

No question in my view that newyork.org is far and away the best.

I think that .info is much stronger for locations.

.net doesn’t go that well with location/city names as compared to .info, .net is best suited for commercial and networking related sites. Even .org doesn’t match that well for a city name unless ofcourse it’s for an organisation based in that particular city.

Best extension(s) best investing

Which extension(s) best for investing.

put your opinion here.

My preference is

1. .com
2. .net
3 .org
4. .info

I think .ca names the best for investment percentage wise. You still register pretty good names that will bring you 300% percent guaranteed during next 2 years

I personally think that .IN (country code for India) has potentia,Reasons for my view? (1) wide use of English; (2) growing economy and large proportion of tech savvy; (3) clear rules on access to registration and selling by folks outside the country; and (4) nice, short, pronounceable extension.

.com is leading from all extension.

.com could never be replaced as it is branded as the default internet address extension around the world. If you are using another extension other then .com, no matter how much you spend on branding your address with your extension, you will still be loosing visitors if you do not have the .com version.

As a traffic collector/seller I dont care about .ext and I register any extension domains which can bring traffic/revenue. So some predicitions about possible traffic/revenue a domain can give are more important for me than just investing in .ext itself.

.com is a good investment obviously.

After .com .cn and .in are also excellent investments considering their 1 billion+ populations each and the number of people using the internet in each of those countries is rising rapidly. I think .cc is one of the worst investments and the more extensions that come out the more it will decrease its value.

I find .com is the most valuable TLD. I think no one can really doubt that.

Best new TLD

Which new TLD do you personally like the best?

I like .biz, .info is to long in my opinion.

.biz is the best in my opinion.

.biz for its commercial appeal.

My preference is

1. .biz
2. .tv
3. .cc
4. .info
5. .ws

.info is best all of them.
.biz sounds unprofessional to me, sounds like a slang term and I don’t think corporates will adopt it.

I hate to say it but .biz is the best in my opinion out of that batch.
In my opinion they are all pointless, what’s wrong with .com, .net and .org.
Yes, .com is evergreen domain name extension.

.com.cn v/s. .cn

Is a .com.cn worth registering if it is a premium one worder? How frequently is this extension even used due to the .cn?

.com.cn is better

most of the domain player in China prefer: (.com then) .cn then .com.cn
as shorter is better!

Agree .com is the king .. followed by .cn and then .com.cn

If you want to use the .cn or .com.cn yourself, please choose .com.cn!But if you want to sell or buy ones, please choose .cn!

I like .cn personally.

.com.cn sounds professional whereas .cn sounds global!

.com.cn is better

But CNNIC have some rules and some methods to take back the domians if CNNIC want.

a .com or a .ws?

I am a Comp Eng major and I am developing this small tool which I will be selling for a small fee. I need a domain name for my “company”. Ok so I am between two available choices: either a 8 letter .com or a 4 letter .ws .. which one do you think I should go for??
I think .com will be best.
Neither.

Take both the .info and .biz

.com is king and will be for a long long time. The others are for those unable to acquire the .com.
.biz is the ultimate in cheese wiz
no choice. .com

.ws means worth shit (actually means western samoa)

Take any open global domain (com, net, org, info, biz) if you want to sell globally, or a .us if you want to be associtiated with the US market.
I’d avoid repurposed Country code domains. For a busines .com is preferrable even if longer, but .biz a second choice.

Domain Forwarding/Redirection

I have listen about Domain Forwarding/Redirection but dont no what is this.
anybody can tell me

Domain forwarding is also called as URL redirection/forwarding. It is a technique on the world wide web for making a web page available under many URLs. It allows to redirect web requests for our domain name to content hosted on a different server.

The users might search the same URL’s under different names, example gogle.com and googel.com. In this case, the companies or organisation can register these domains. So that it will redirect to the correct one google.com.

An author may move a site to a new domain name. Using the URL redirects, the incoming requests to the old URL will be redirected to the new URL. This will help the users who use bookmarks and also avoid to search and detect the new URL in search engines.

Is it better or not to get domain name separate from hosting company

hi,

i’m all new to this but was wondering if i should register domain name with a registrar or whatever it is you call it or can i just sign up with a hosting company like ix webhosting where they allow you to register 1 domain name. my concern is this, if for any reason i decide to switch hosting company, can i bring this domain name with me.

Prevent yourself from any possible trouble and register the domain at a registrar seperate from the web hosting company.

Never register your domain with your web host. It’s a bad idea!

most of the problems i read are usually because the users did not check to see if the domain name is actually registered to them insted of the hosting company. i was assured by the company i asked ( ix webhosting ) that i have full control over my domain and would be listed as the owner so i assume shouldn’t be too difficult to transfer if i find their services lacking. please correct me if i’m wrong

Completely agree with actually owning your domain name, because if you ever have problems with the hosting company, you can always transfer your domain name. From personal experience I have lost a domain because of this.

My answer is yes! I learned it the hard way, with my site down for a whole week.

While sayng ALL hosts are “keeping your domain names” may be a bit exaggerated, there are DEFINITELY more than just a few HUNDRED horror stories. I have personally come across quite a number of situations myself switching hosts for my clients; many, including some well established hosting companies, are making transfers or even changing nameservers DIFFICULT, and you could guess the reason why

Having two different provider for Domain and Hosting is totally depends on the clients and the way in which he find himself comfortable, some prefer different providers and they cant give the whole control to one ervice provider, whereas some prefer single provider as it help them in resolving the technical issues. So its all upto you and your mode of working.

How many domain name??

hello,

When you all buy a domain name – Made-up Example: cpwebhosting.net

Do you also buy cpwebhosting.com, cpwebhosting.us, cpwebhosting.info, cpwebhosting.org etc to park? To protect others for using your idea

If you have an ambitious project in the works, then yes, register all related domain names.

Normally having a multiple versions also helps in search engine efficiently.

If you have the money, you can buy up all the tld. No one can blackmail and extort you for money holding any of your domain name.

I think its best to buy up as many versions as you can afford. But only market one brand, and like you said park the rest at your main site. If you run a webhost, or use private name servers, you could use one(I usually use a .net) for the name servers, and still park it on the main site. Many uses for variants of a name.

I think you’re safe if you buy both the .com and .net extensions.
It helps in search engine when all the gTLDs are registered with the same domain name and same owner, when you register all the gTLDs for single domain and try to search for that name in google then the google will list all the services and related pages for that domain name.
Thats Better to get other extensions too but if you are going to keep your brand and have your domain name be kept in your visitors mind, dont park those domain names on top of the main one.

Can .eu domains for US residents?

Can I register / own .eu domains even if I am from the US?

Does anyone have any experience on this?

as far as i know, NO

To own the name, you need a business connection with the EU or an address in EU.

Unlike .us or .ca citizens of EU countries that are living outside the EU cannot register .eu

how ever if u have a contact person residing in EU, you can register a domain in his/her name.
